How To Make Delicious Green Smoothies for Weight Loss

I wanted to share my green smoothies for weight loss recipes. Drinking green smoothies is the surest way to lose weight. When I started drinking a single green smoothie a day, I started to lose weight fast. And I felt great!

What is a Green Smoothie?

“Green Smoothie” is the term used to describe any smoothie that includes raw green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, broccoli, or collard greens. They are packed with nutrients. A single green smoothie likely has more vegetables than most people eat in an entire day.

The human body finds leafy greens hard to digest. This is possibly because people don’t chew them long enough and because there is not enough stomach acid to digest them. The process of blending greens to make a smoothie shreds the greens, essentially making them pre-digested. When prepared this way, more of the nutrients from the greens are absorbed into the body.

Do Green Smoothies Taste Bad?

No! This is the worst misconception about green smoothies. I’ll admit they look horrible. But they don’t taste horrible.

Even though they are called green smoothies, they do not have to be made entirely of leafy greens. Adding fruit will add flavor to your weight loss smoothies. Mix your smoothies with 40% greens and 60% fruit. When prepared this way, the smoothie will taste of fruit and you will not taste the greens at all. You will also find that the vegetables balance out the sweetness of the fruit. The better your blender, the smoother your smoothie will be and the easier to drink.

After you make a green smoothie, if you find the taste is too strong, you can add vanilla or lemon juice to give it a more pleasant taste.

Instead of fruit, some people like using celery and avocado as the base for their smoothie. Give this alternative a try and see how you like it!

Others prefer to put ice in their green smoothies. The cold minimizes the taste somewhat.

This video will show you how to make a great tasting green smoothie every time:

Benefits of Green Smoothies

  • Fast and Easy: Green smoothies are fast and easy to prepare. All you need is a blender. It takes about 5 minutes to make one, and that also includes cleaning up.
  • Lose weight and shed belly fat easily and quickly: Once you start drinking green smoothies regularly, you'll quickly notice a difference in your weight. They are low in carbohydrates and high in fiber, making them the perfect diet food. To maximize the effect, do not drink your veggie smoothie with other foods. It is best to have no food 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after your smoothie.
  • Loaded with Fiber: Unlike vegetable juices, green smoothies retain the fiber of the original greens.
  • Controls Cravings: The fiber in the smoothies will keep you feeling full. As you diet, you will find that green smoothies will control your appetite, curb your cravings, and help you lose weight.
  • Great Skin, Shiny Hair and Bright Eyes: After drinking green smoothies regularly, you will notice a huge difference. Green smoothies have an amazing beautifying effect on your skin, hair and eyes. People have credited green smoothies with clearing up dandruff, eczema, and seborrheic dermatitis.
  • Overall Improved Health and Increased Energy: Green smoothies will boost your energy levels, improve your immune system, help you lose weight and detox your system. Greens are a rich source of protein. They are also full of magnesium, calcium and other alkaline minerals your body needs. Plus they are an excellent source of Omega3 unsaturated fatty acids. The nutrients in a green smoothie are incorporated into the blood stream very quickly, and your body does not use any energy to digest it. This means that you won't suffer an energy "crash" afterwards like you experience with caffeine.
  • Balance: When people start dieting, they tend to eat more fruit. They usually experience huge spikes in energy followed by a crash. Balancing your fruit intake with green smoothies eliminates this up and down pattern. The fiber in the greens slows down the absorption of fruit sugars giving you a slow and consistent dose of energy at a rate your body loves.
  • Habit Forming: Once you start drinking green smoothies every day and you start to feel the extra energy and health benefits that go with them, drinking them will be like second nature.
  • Great Way To Get Your Kids To Eat Vegetables: Don’t tell your kids what is in them. Just let them taste the fruit, and they will love them. Even if your kids won’t eat spinach or other leafy greens, they will still gulp these down.

Rotate your Greens

Make sure you rotate your greens when making your veggie smoothie recipes. All greens, including spinach, romaine and kale, have trace amounts of alkaloids. If you continue to eat the same green repeatedly, these tiny amounts of alkaloids will accumulate in your body. Eventually they can cause a toxic reaction. You can avoid this by varying the greens you use in your veggie smoothies. At the same time you will ensure that you get a wide range of nutrients in your diet.

Some great greens to include in your smoothies include:

  • Spinach: A milder green that most people are accustomed to, which makes it a good place to start. Considered a "super food", spinach is a great source of iron. A 60 gram serving of spinach has about 1.9 mg of iron - almost twice as much as most other green vegetable. It is also a great source of other vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. According to many studies, the flavonoids in spinach can help slow cancer cell growth. Other studies show that the potassium and folic acid in spinach can lower the risk of hypertension and heart disease.
  • Dandelion Greens: Its bitter taste is not to everyone's liking, but this bitterness can be masked with strong tasting fruit like pineapples. These greens are good for managing your cholesterol levels.
  • Swiss Chard: Has a flavor comparable to spinach, but a bit saltier. It is a great source of vitamin C, K, and A. It is also rich in magnesium, iron, manganese, and potassium.
  • Collard Greens: Bitter in taste but its nutrients make it worth your while. It is rich in vitamin C, A, K, manganese, calcium, and folate. It is often used in detox smoothies. You will need to mask the bitterness with great tasting fruit.
  • Kale: Full of vitamin C and K, beta carotene, calcium, fiber, and lutein. Kale's antioxidants and phytonutrients are reputed to have powerful anti-diabetic and anti-cancer properties. Kale takes some effort to chop up, but it is definitely worth the effort.
  • Romaine Lettuce: Most people don't know it, but romaine is 17% protein. It also has more vitamin C than an orange. Plus it is rich in omega-3s, calcium, iron, vitamin B (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and B9), magnesium, copper, phosphorous, manganese, and other minerals.

I usually use one type of green all week and then change it the next week.
